Fruity People Collage

One CA Visual Art Standard centers around how to create feelings with one’s own artwork. This book “How Are You Peeling?” is full of some very creative photographs of fruit and vegetables, all made to reflect a wide variety of emotions. Reading it first helps to make connections that certain shapes can look a lot like faces, when using one’s imagination.

1. I’ve collected some photographs of fruit and vegetables, the low resolution type that are free for comp making. You can download the 2-page file HERE. Print as many copies as needed on inkjet paper.

2. I recommend that the students start by choosing a large shape to make the head, then the body, legs, arms, and finally details on top.

3. After all the body parts are collected and laid out, they are glued down with a glue stick.

FREE Pattern Snake Template

A tip from a teacher led me to this coil snake project, which I have recreated on my computer. The original called for drawing on paper plates, but I prefer to print my pattern shown HERE on 110 lb. stock to save a whole lotta time.

1. Kinder students and older can color in this snake from head to tail and identify their coloring pattern (A-B-A-B, or A-B-C, or A-A-B-B, etc.) When complete, additional line patterns may be added as well as shown on my sample HERE. The easiest way is for students to decide which pattern goes on which color (hearts on red sections, for instance) and proceed until all the sections have matching line patterns.

2. When finished, students cut out the snake on the thick black line. The head is taped to a string and hung so the snake will turn and spin as this example HERE.

FREE Dr. Seuss Template Download

I’ve made a blank hat template and posted it HERE to help celebrate Dr. Seuss’ upcoming birthday. I once used it as an art history lesson by reviewing a couple of famous artists (Matisse, Picasso, Van Gogh, etc.) and then asking students to create a hat in their style. I’m sure there are other possibilities, I’d love to hear about them if you have a chance to share.

FREE Color Wheel Download

I’ve found that most color wheels are either too complicated (lots of sections and subsections) or too simple (three overlapping balloons) for your average elementary student. My solution is to make my own, and also diagram primary, secondary, warm, cool and complementary colors. You can download a copy for free HERE.

Free Draw a Winter Town Download

This time of year it’s easy to add a little winter flair to architecture drawing. I love vintage features found on old buildings, so I’ve made a pdf file that has samples, along with a grid template that encourages students to draw straight lines. You can preview and download my free pdf file HERE.

1. Print on letter size paper. Students may refer to the sample page for ideas and then draw their own cityscape on the grid paper.
2. When the drawing is complete, all lines are traced over with a thin black marker.
3. Crayon or colored pencil may be used to color. Happy Holidays to all!

FREE New Year's Card Coloring Download

I’ve used the illuminated letters at clipartETC.com to create a template for a New Year’s card. Click here to download your free pdf file.

1. Print on 8.5x11 card or cover stock in the landscape orientation.

2. Use fine point markers or colored pencils to color in the letters.

3. Fold the paper horizontally and you are ready to add your personal greeting inside.
